The "Tolhuis" in #Brugge (West-Vlaanderen), comprises several buildings, including the main Tolhuis, a merchant’s house from the early 1200s. Located in a thriving trade hub near the emerging harbor, it became the office for the Grote Tol (import tax) by the 14th century, with a weighhouse for taxing goods by weight. The toll, a princely tax, was leased to nobles, passing to the Van Luxemburg family by 1400. The city acquired it in 1549, and the toll system ended during the French period (1794-1814), replaced by customs.
