Wallace Monument

Description

The National Wallace Monument in #Stirling is a 67 meter sandstone tower on Abbey Craig hill, overlooking the site of William Wallace's 1297 victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Designed by architect John Thomas Rochead in Victorian gothic/Scottish baronial style, it blends a stretched medieval tower house with an external stair turret and distinctive crown spire. Construction began in 1861 after a public competition and was funded by global donations. It opened in 1869 after eight years, featuring a 246-step spiral staircase to halls and panoramic views.
