Description

The "Universität Helmstedt" (Academia Julia) in #Helmstedt 🇩🇪, founded in 1576 by Duke Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, was the first Protestant university in northern Germany. It operated until its closure by Napoleon in 1810 and briefly ranked among Germany's largest. Its main landmark is the Juleum Novum (great auditorium and library), built 1592-1597 (extended to 1612) by architect Paul Francke in ornate Weser Renaissance style. This palatial building features large windows, richly sculpted gables depicting the four faculties, a prominent tower, liberal arts figures, and the university's Samson coat of arms. University buildings cluster around the Collegienhof.
