Description

The "Holstentor" in #Lübeck is the iconic symbol of the Hanseatic city. This brick gothic gatewas constructed 1464-1478 by master builder Hinrich Helmstede, inspired by Dutch models. Featuring two massive round towers with conical roofs flanking a central arched passage and stepped gable, it served as defensive gate and status symbol during Lübeck's Hanseatic peak. Built on marshy ground, its towers lean noticeably. It is one of the two city gates of Lübeck.
