The City Hall of #Cardiff is an Edwardian Baroque landmark in Portland stone, opened in October 1906 within the ambitious Cathays Park civic centre. It replaced the outdated 1853 Town Hall on St Mary Street after Lanchester, Stewart and Rickards won the design competition. Built with the world's first fully electric construction site (using cranes to lift blocks), it cost £129,708 and earned its "City Hall" name following Cardiff's 1905 city charter. The soaring 59m clock tower, with gilded dials and motto-inscribed bells, defines its silhouette.
