Description

"Emmanuel College" in #Cambridge was founded in 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay on the site of a former Dominican friary dissolved in 1539. The college repurposed the monks' buildings: the friary chapel became the dining hall, and their refectory turned into the chapel. Architect Ralph Symons designed the initial structures, opened in 1588. In the late 17th century, Christopher Wren built a new chapel (1677), one of his three Cambridge works. The grounds retain the friars' large fish pond and ancient bathing pool, now Europe's oldest continuously used outdoor swimming pool, in the Fellows' Garden.
