The "Commanderie van Sint Jan" in #Nijmegen (Gelderland), established in 1196 by Count Alardus, originally served as a hospital for pilgrims. In 1214, it was acquired by the Knights Hospitaller, transforming it into a monastery and lending the building its name. Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, the Commanderie experienced various transitions, including use by both Catholic and Protestant factions, and served as a military quarters during conflicts. In 1655, it housed the Illustre School, a precursor to the Kwartierlijke Academie van Nijmegen.
