The Belfry of Doornik (Henegouwen) is the oldest belfry in Belgium, dating back to the late 12th century. In 1188, King Philip Augustus of France granted Tournai the right to build a belfry, resulting in a 30-meter high square tower, possibly on the site of a former Roman fortification. In 1294, the tower was elevated to 70 meters, adding side turrets and a spire adorned with a gilded dragon. A significant restoration took place in 1392 after a major fire, introducing new bells and decorative elements like mermaids, tritons, and banners. In 1844, the belfry underwent another restoration, adopting a neo-gothic style.
