Description

The Castle of #Coevorden (Drenthe), is the only castle in the province of Drenthe. Originally built around 1025 as a motte-and-bailey structure, it occupied a strategic position on trade routes between Münster and Groningen, controlling lucrative toll rights. The castle changed hands multiple times, often violently, and was involved in significant events like the Battle of Ane in 1227 and the Siege of Coevorden in 1592. In 1402, Bishop Frederik van Blankenheim rebuilt it, and in 1522, Duke Charles of Guelders renovated it, likely giving it a square layout. The castle fell into disrepair over time but was restored between 1967 and 1972.
