Description

The Plompe- or Dieventoren, also known as the Gevangentoren or "Latijntje," is a medieval tower in Amersfoort, Netherlands. Its exact construction date is uncertain, but it was first mentioned in 1434 when it served as the city's second prison, earning it the name Dieventoren ("Thieves' Tower"). After the first city prison closed in 1554, it became the sole municipal prison until its closure in 1889. In 1860, following the demolition of the Agnietenklooster, the tower acquired a bell and was nicknamed "Latijntje." Restorations occurred in 1942 and 2015. From 1953 to 1978, it housed the Dutch Carillon School and currently serves as the headquarters for the Gilde der Edele Flumieren, a private group promoting Amersfoort's cultural life.
