Description

The Pelsertoren is a wall tower in Zwolle's city wall, built between 1475 and 1500 as part of the city's fortifications. Located in the northern part of the city center at Aan de Stadsmuur 83, east of the former Steenpoort, it, along with the 17th-century Pelserpoortje, holds the status of a national monument. The name "Pelsertoren" likely emerged in the 20th century; earlier records referred to it as 'Vestingtoren' or 'the tower near the Pelserpoortje'. Around 1980, the tower underwent a 'historicizing' restoration by architects Verlaan and Nijhof, who replaced the existing sloped roof with battlements, embrasures, and a turret based on historical drawings, though it's uncertain if the tower originally appeared this way. Historically, the Pelsertoren was situated between the Koormakerstoren to the west and the Diezerpoort to the east.
