Description

The Bourgonjetoren, a 15th-century artillery tower in Zutphen, was constructed in 1457 to defend against Burgundian threats. Standing 12 meters tall with walls up to four meters thick, it housed the city's cannons, including a five-meter-long piece weighing over 10,000 kilograms. Notably, this cannon was never used in battle; when Duke Charles the Bold conquered Gelre in 1473, he seized the impressive weapon. In 1741, Baron van Heeckeren added a tea dome atop the tower for views over the IJssel River. Although the adjacent house 't Waliën was destroyed in World War II, the sturdy Bourgonjetoren endured.
