Description

The Drommedaris is the southern gateway of Enkhuizen, originally built in 1540 as a defense tower at the entrance of the Old Harbor. Initially named Zuiderpoort or Ketenpoort, it was elevated between 1649 and 1657 to its current form. Over the centuries, it has served various purposes, including as a gunpowder storage, prison, guardhouse, excise office, spinning mill, telegraph office, and even hosted the first exhibition of the Zuiderzee Museum in 1949. In 1960, it became a student center, and today, it functions as a cultural center. The building houses a carillon of 44 bells from various founders, including Geert van Wou and Pieter Hemony. Notably, during a 1945 bombing in World War II, the Drommedaris sustained significant damage.
