British Dominions House

Description

The "British Dominions House" is a monumental Beaux-Arts style office building located #Antwerpen (Antwerpen), designed in 1923 by architects Alfred Portielje and M. Peeters. Commissioned by the Eagle, Star & British Dominions Insurance Company Ltd., the building was constructed by the Antwerp-based firm J. Van Riel & Ed. Ceurvorst. The insurance company, established in London in 1904 by Sir Edward Mortimer Mountain, expanded its services and, through acquisitions, became one of the UK's largest insurers.​ The building features a symmetrical façade with a prominent corner rotunda, rising into a tower crowned by a ribbed dome. The exterior showcases white natural stone with Louis XVI-style decorative elements. The main entrance boasts a refined wrought-iron double door bearing the initials "ES" for Eagle Star. Inside, the vestibule and staircase are adorned in neo-Louis XVI style, featuring marble flooring with a compass rose and sculpted reliefs symbolizing the insurance industry.
