Description

The "Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore" in #Bergamo was founded in 1137 by citizens vowing thanks to the Virgin Mary after a plague. It stands on the site of an 8th-century church over a Roman temple. The exterior preserves Lombard Romanesque features: massive walls, round arches, and ornate 14th-century porches with marble lions (white Candoglia and red Verona marble). The interior retains a Greek-cross plan with nave and aisles but was lavishly transformed in the 17th century with baroque gilded stuccoes, frescoes, and decorations. Construction continued into the 14th-15th centuries, blending romanesque roots with later gothic and baroque elements. It was consecrated in 1185.
