The town hall of #Basel, a striking red sandstone landmark on the Marktplatz, was built 1504-1514 after the city joined the Swiss Confederation in 1501. It replaced an earlier structure (post-1356 earthquake). The core is late gothic with renaissance elements: three arched entrances, ornate façade with historical murals/frescoes (including lost Holbein works), and an inner courtyard.
