The "Porta Nigra" ("Black Gate") in #Trier is a massive Roman city gate built around 170-180 AD under Marcus Aurelius (or possibly Commodus). Constructed from over 7,000 large grey sandstone blocks, it features two projecting four-story towers flanking a central passage, with Hellenistic-influenced military architecture. Left unfinished, it darkened over time from weathering/smoke, gaining its name by the Middle Ages. It is the best-preserved Roman gate north of the Alps.
