"Amalienborg", the Danish royal family's residence in #Copenhagen, comprises four identical classical palaces with lavish rococo interiors, arranged around an octagonal courtyard centered on an equestrian statue of Frederick V. Built in the 1750s as the centerpiece of Frederiksstaden, the palaces were designed by architect Nicolai Eigtved as grand mansions for noble families, with identical exteriors but varied interiors. The site earlier hosted Sophie Amalienborg, a palace constructed 1669-1673 for Queen Sophie Amalie that tragically burned in 1689 during a birthday opera, killing around 180.
