Description

"Schloss Johannisburg" in #Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, is a symmetrical German Renaissance castle built of red Buntsandstein between 1605 and 1614 by architect Georg Ridinger for Prince-Bishop Johann Schweikhard von Kronberg of Mainz. It replaced a 14th-century castle destroyed by fire in 1552 during Margrave Albert Alcibiades' attack. Until 1803, it served as the secondary residence of the Archbishops and Prince-Electors of Mainz. The four-wing design surrounds a square courtyard, with four corner towers turning octagonal above square bases, topped by slate roofs and lanterns. The older keep protrudes into the north wing under a steep roof with corner turrets.
