Description

The Art Pavilion in #Zagreb, Southeast Europe's oldest gallery (est. 1898), is the city's only purpose-built space for large exhibitions. Conceived by painter Vlaho Bukovac in 1895, it began as a prefabricated iron skeleton designed by Hungarian architects Flóris Korb and Kálmán Giergl for Budapest's 1896 Millennium Exhibition. Shipped to Zagreb afterward, Austrian architects Fellner & Helmer reimagined it in neo-renaissance style, with construction by Hönigsberg & Deutsch completed in 1898. Inaugurated December 15 with the hugely popular Croatian Salon, its facades boast academic busts: eastern side honors Giulio Clovio, Andrea Schiavone, and Vittore Carpaccio; western side features Michelangelo, Raphael, and Titian.
