Description

Vianden Castle in #Vianden in northern Luxembourg, one of the largest fortified castles west of the Rhine, crowns a rocky promontory at 310 meters overlooking the River Our. Its roots reach back to a Roman outpost in the 4th century and a possible Carolingian refuge, but the familiar medieval form arose from the 11th century in romanesque style. Around 1000, a stone watchtower and oval wall appeared. By 1100, a square keep, kitchen, chapel, and residences housed an aristocratic family. The 12th century added a larger tower, a striking decagonal chapel, an extended palace, and connecting gallery. Early 13th-century expansions included a two-storey palace and romanesque details funded by Frederick III. Mid-13th century brought full gothic transformations. It served as the influential Counts of Vianden's seat until the early 15th century.
