It won first prize in a 1872-76 architectural competition organized by the City of Brussels to develop the Central Boulevards), led by Mayor Jules Anspach and architect Léon Suys. The Haussmann-inspired eclectic-neoclassical building features ornate balconies, pediments, and cat motifs (cats chasing mice in friezes).
