Joannes Curtius, born Jean de Corte (1551-1628), was a wealthy arms and gunpowder merchant who sold to the Spanish army during the Eighty Years' War. He built a grand house in Liège between 1597 and 1605, using red brick and Namur stone, considered a prime example of Mosan Renaissance style. After his death, the main building, Palais Curtius, was transferred to the Mont de Piété monastery, while the Résidence Curtius stayed in the family until 1734.
