Description

"Kasteel Sterkenburg", a knightly estate in #DriebergenRijsenburg (Utrecht), originated in 1261 as a fief of Gelre. Its architecture, initially a medieval fortress, evolved significantly. Likely begun by Gijsbrecht van Wulven (1238-1250) and completed by Ernst van Wulven (1265-1295), the castle's early structure remains partly obscure. In 1848, Kees Kneppelhout extensively renovated it, giving Sterkenburg its current neo-gothic appearance, with towers and ornate details.
