The Belfry and Carillon of Menen (West-Vlaanderen), Belgium, on the Grote Markt, has a rich history. Construction began in 1574 but was halted in 1576 due to religious wars. Work resumed in 1610, adding a brick superstructure atop the original stone base, crowned with a wooden spire. This spire was destroyed during the 1706 siege of Menen but was subsequently rebuilt. In 1828, the belfry was restored, adding an octagonal fourth level with an openwork balustrade. The current carillon, installed in 1962, comprises 49 bells weighing nearly five tons.
