The old town hall of #Bonn is a three-story rococo structure built 1737-1738 by electoral court architect Michael Leveilly, though its ornate facade and gilded grand staircase were only fully completed around 1780. It replaced a modest 15th-century predecessor destroyed by artillery in the 1689 siege of Bonn. After an earlier design was rejected, Elector Clemens August I laid the foundation stone in 1737. The building, with seven window axes and mansard roof featuring dormers, long served as the city's administrative seat and became famous for its prominent staircase hosting historic public appearances.
