"Huize de Schaffelaar" in #Barneveld (Gelderland), traces its roots to a 16th-century fortified house called "Hackfort" (later renamed "Schaffelaar"). Destroyed by Spanish troops around 1585, it passed through families such as Van Hackfort, Vijgh, and Van Essen. In 1767 Lucas Willem van Essen rebuilt it luxuriously, with a garden by a pupil of André le Nôtre . The estate burned down in 1800, and in 1852 Jasper Hendrik baron van Zuylen van Nievelt commissioned architect A. van Veggel to construct the current neogothic, neo-Tudor style mansion.
