Description

"Predjama Castle" is a dramatic renaissance fortress built directly into a cave mouth in south-central Slovenia in #Predjama. First documented in 1274 as a gothic structure under a natural rocky arch, it was expanded by the Luegg noble family. Its pre-war fame centers on the 15th-century robber baron Erasmus of Lueg, who defied the Habsburgs from this near-impregnable seat, using a secret vertical shaft to resupply during a long siege, until legend claims betrayal led to his death by cannon in the lavatory. The original castle was destroyed, but the current renaissance version, pressed against the cliff, was built in 1570 and remains largely unchanged.
