Description

"Beersel Castle", located in #Beersel (Vlaams-Brabant), Belgium, is a well-preserved medieval fortress constructed between 1300 and 1310 by Godefroid of Hellebeke to defend Brussels' southern borders. In 1356, during the War of the Brabant Succession, it was burned but swiftly rebuilt. In 1488, supporting Maximilian of Austria, the castle withstood an initial siege by Brussels militias but fell in 1489 after heavy artillery attacks, leading to significant damage. Following Maximilian's victory, Brussels was mandated to restore the castle between 1491 and 1508. The castle's architecture features a circular enceinte with three large towers and is surrounded by a moat.
